World Smokefree Day - Thursday 31 May 2012

This year celebrate World Smokefree Day by raising awareness in your workplace of the importance of being smokefree!

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in New Zealand, accounting for between 4,300 and 4,700 deaths every year.

When deaths associated with exposure to second hand smoke are included in these figures, the rate rises to over 5,000 per year.

Did you know:

  • Employees who smoke take up to 33% more sick leave than non smokers.
  • A smoker taking four 10 minute breaks each day works a month less than a non smoker in the course of a year.
  • Half of all people who smoke today, and continue to do so, will eventually be killed from a smoking related illness, and will die an average of 15 years earlier than they would if they were a non smoker.
Calculate how much smoking is costing your workplace.

How you can help raise awareness....

  • Staff newsletter - add some information about World Smokefree Day and where staff can go for help if they would like to free themselves from smoking
  • Put up posters - in staff rooms and smoking areas
  • Post a message on the intranet - tell staff about World Smokefree Day and options for help to quit
  • Put on a morning or afternoon tea - include a smokefree display

Be Seen, Be Bright

Daylight saving has ended, and the "Be Bright" campaign has begun - focusing on reducing cycling accidents and increasing awareness of cyclist safety.  Cyclists will be reminded to light up their bikes and wear high-visibility clothing to help keep them safe on the road - especially during low-light periods at dawn and dusk or in poor weather.

Tauranga’s Be Bright campaign will involve:

  • Checkpoints at key locations where Travel Safe and Police will assess reflective gear and lights. Those that have adequate lights will be rewarded with a voucher. Cyclists that do not have adequate lights will be given a bicycle light so traffic are aware of them sharing the road.
  • Be Safe, Be Seen, Be Bright – “Cars kill what they can’t see”  awareness signs
  • Promotion to workplaces that participate in the WorkWell programme run by Toi Te Ora – Public Health Service
